How DPNow Pictures of the Day are selected

New Zealand resident, Trevor White, also known as ddigit is a familiar contributor to the DPNow discussion forum and photo galleries, and is particularly know for his New Zealand landscapes.

Trevor explains: "The tree is on a steep hill above the little village of Akaroa on the Banks Peninsular, Canterbury, New Zealand. The settlement was originally French and represented an attempt for France to colonise the country ahead of the British. The photo was taken late afternoon on a Nikon D80 with a polariser. I composed the shot so the hill was framed by the underneath of the tree. I find that tree shapes are a really satisifying subject."

Indeed, Trevor's wind-swept tree is almost bonsai-like in character and is beautifully complemented by the blue sky and rugged landscape. The rickety-looking fencing in the bottom right corner adds some dimension to the composition too.

Trevor reflects that his photography now represents greater freedom than his camera was once allowed: "I am retired. In a previous life I worked for a Government Department and had to take evidentially correct photographs for legal proceedings. NOW - I can take what I like and have complete freedom to travel around New Zealand (with my wife Dianne who is a really competent photographer), and shoot away to our hearts content. My only regret is that I didnt take advantage of the freedom years ago."
