Ride him Cowboy, by Trevor White:

How DPNow Pictures of the Day are selected
New Zealander Trevor White (known as 'ddigit', or 'Kiwi Trev' on DPNow) is back, with his second DPNow Picture of the Day, following from his Castlepoint Lighthouse picture from last month. Today's picture from Trevor looks right out of the American Wild West, but this rodeo was taken in New Zealand.

Says Trevor: "The photo (and many other rodeo ones) were taken at a little town called Methven situated at the base of Mt Hutt ski area. On labour day (a public holiday) the town goes country, with country music competitions, line dancing and, finally, the annual rodeo. "Members of our photo club made the journey for the event. This particular photo was taken with a Panasonic FZ20 from a knoll overlooking the arena. Because of the speed of the event I bracketed the exposures."

Trevor has successfully captured the action and atmosphere of the rodeo. It looks like the long reach of Trevor's superzoom Panasonic Lumix FZ20 was a definite benefit, too. I can detect some post-processing to blur the background, a desirable thing to do, though there are some tell-tale edges that give it away, but that shouldn't detract from what is an exciting action shot.
