How DPNow Pictures of the Day are selected
by Ian Burley

A guide to POTDs and the DPNow galleries and discussion forum

Find out how you can have a shot at getting on Picture of the Day!

Every weekday here on Digital Photography Now, we feature a Picture of the Day - or POTD for short. Here are the POTDs listed for June, 2007, for example. We don't just show any old picture, we look for above average images and we explain why the image is special and complement that with some background information about the image from the photographer and also some insight into him or her.

These POTDs are selected exclusively from photos uploaded by people like you - DPNow readers - to the DPNow Photo Gallery. To have your own, personal, DPNow gallery, you need to be signed up to the DPNow Discussion Forum, which is integrated with the gallery system. It's completely free of charge, incidentally.

Get started

As soon as you have registered (and confirmed your registration by replying to a confirmation email) you can immediately start posting your web-sized images (we recommend 800 pixels wide) to the DPNow gallery and forum.

To get going on the gallery, go to the gallery front page, click on the 'upload photos' button and follow the instructions.

It's a good idea to ensure, if possible, that the camera exif metadata embedded in your image files is preserved. If you use the Adobe Photoshop 'Save to Web' option, for example, this interesting information about how your camera was set up to take the picture, is lost. Use Save As and choose JPEG format instead.

Gallery Picks

We regularly promote interesting recently added pictures via our Gallery Picks feature - here is an example, so even if you don't get a POTD airing in a given week, your gallery could be highlighted anyway.

POTD is for all types of photographers!

We're always keeping an eye on the galleries to spot particularly good shots, but don't think that just because you are an amateur snapper rather than a hardened pro or keen enthusiast you will be passed over. We're on the look out for interesting pictures and we can forgive some lack of technical quality if the picture itself stands out.

And don't forget to post your pictures on the DPNow forum for great feedback from other forum members. We provide a one-click forum posting facility of selected photos from a pop-up thumbnail selector .You can choose the Critique board for serious and in-depth comments on your pictures, or you can choose a Photo Story board if you simply want to share a picture with others without the need for constructive criticism.

Win a Kingston Technology memory card

There are also fortnightly 'Salon' photo contests, run by DPNow members, for the members, where you have the chance of winning a Kingston Technology 2GB high speed memory card and the privilege of curating the next salon.

We're working hard to build up our photo community, where amateurs and pros, alike, from all over the world interact in a friendly and often humorous atmosphere. If you aren't there already - we'd love to welcome you!
