Danny Chau provoked some interested reaction on the DPNow discussion forum and photo galleries last month with this shot of a wealthy Chinese BMW owner competing for space on the streets of Beijing with a peasant on a cycle-powered contraption.

Now based back in his native Hong Kong after over 30 years in the UK, Danny took the picture featured today, using a Canon EOS-5D, in Beijing last summer.

Danny spent some time in Beijing last year, taking some time off soon after moving back to Hong Kong from London. The picture appears a tad muted in colour and saturation. Danny explains: "The colour is deliberate, as I am going through a colour shift phase at present." I did notice that the original shot was added to the gallery encoded by Adobe RGB colour space and this does mute colour when displayed on the Web in most browsers as colour management isn't supported.

Danny is best known as a colour management consultant and master ink-jet photo printer and image retoucher, which is interesting as his origins are in the black and white archival and exhihbition printing business. There is a lot of photography in the blood of the Chau family: One of Danny's brothers, Tony Chau, is a successful fashion and commercial photographer. Meanwhile his youngest brother, Ted, with his wife, Vicky, runs Danny's London-based professional printing and retouching studio, Chau Digital, which is also behind the da Vinci fine art ink-jet printer paper brand.
