Driving, by Andrew Thatcher:
How DPNow Pictures of the Day are selectedDriving is both the theme and the title of today's featured Picture of the Day photographer, Andrew Thatcher. Another well known DPNow discussion forum and photo gallery contributor, Andrew has used a long exposure, at night, while in a moving car, to great effect. It's another effort inspired by our ongoing Kingston Technology-sponsored Salon photo contest:
"The photo was one taken for the salon comp 'Everyday life' (another from the same set won)," says Andrew. "I wanted to get the sense of being in your car and everything else moving around you. The everyday chore of getting from A to B.
"The camera was set up on a tripod in the back seat of my car and set at two seconds and f/8. I did not want to use a cable release while driving so set my D200 to take a frame every 15 odd secs. Then it was just a matter of keeping still while the shutter was open."
Undoubtedly, Andrew's careful planning and execution has been a triumph. The sense of movement has been captured extremely well. I certainly wondered how he set the camera up and now his explanation has been revealed, it seems so obvious. Andrew's gallery on DPNow is definitely worth a visit.

And what about Andrew, himself?: "I've been taking photos since my late teens. I studied photography at Soilhull Tec in the mid 80s and went to work in a photography sudio for a number of years The studio went bust and I moved into other lines of work for 15-odd years. In that time I had no space for a darkroom so took little photography. Not 'til I got a DSLR did I take photography up again, with a bit more passion."
