Market Pano, by Andrew Thatcher:
How DPNow Pictures of the Day are selectedAndrew Thatcher is back again on Picture of the Day with a technically excellent and interesting picture that was shown on the DPNow discussion forum and photo galleries last month.
No less than 15 shots contributed to this picture. Confused? First of all, Andrew has stitched three separate views, from left to right, to make a modest panorama, but each component view is, itself, constructed from five different exposures of the same view.
Andrew explains: "This was shot where I work after a heavy rainstorm and the clouds are really menacing. So I got my tripod out the car and had a walk around the market. It’s a three frame pano with five frames of each shot taken at different exposures I then use a program (Photomatix pro) to combine the frames and then another one (Panavue) to make the Pano. I love Cityscapes in the rain but as I was at work this is the only shot I could do."
The hallmark of a great example of a scene like this is that you could not expect an ordinary snapshot to convey a clarity of the scene, and with such tonal depth. The sky is also particularly impressive. It almost makes you want to be there - despite the fact that its a dark, rainy day!
