Eye Spies a Winner!
30 April 2007, London - Today the British Airways London Eye announces the winner of its online photography competition, launched to commemorate its journey to 25 million visitors. From thousands of entries, the panel of photography experts, headed by British artist Tracey Emin and leading digital photography brand Fujifilm, selected the dramatic sunset image by Brendon Doran of Brentwood.
As well as the opportunity to experience working at a London newspaper picture desk, Brendon’s prize includes seeing his picture on permanent display at the British Airways London Eye ticket office, a class-leading FinePix S6500fd digital camera, courtesy of Fujifilm, a magnum of Laurent Perrier champagne and a Tussauds Group Annual Pass.
This winning photograph will be exhibited along with runners-up from across the country outside the esteemed landmark on London’s South Bank for three weeks, giving visitors the chance to see the finalists’ interpretations of the iconic attraction.
Brendon comments, “I am delighted to be the winner of this competition and proud that the public will be able to see my photo inside the London Eye ticket hall…imagine if another 25 million people get to see my work!”
As headline judge Tracey Emin comments: "It's great to see London so beautiful - and all inspired by the London Eye. There should be a mini-eye in every town and city, just so we would have a good idea of where we are."
The winner of the Fujifilm Young Photographer Award was also announced today. London resident Michael Ciancia’s entry captured the imagination of the judges, showing the wheel of the British Airways London Eye reflected in his girlfriend’s iris. For his original composition Michael receives a FinePix S5700 digital camera.
Other budding photographers whose work was selected by the judges, giving them a prestigious place in the South Bank exhibition include:
Annaliese Comelab of Hackney
Jill Connors of Hornsey
Tim Stanbrook of Winchester
Nathaniel Gonzales of Oxford
Jason Dales of Huntingdon
Gavin Conlan of Colchester
Sean Bolton of Ammanford
Gary Walters of Swindon

David Sharpe, Managing Director of the British Airways London Eye presented winners with their prizes stating: “We are proud that these promising photographers were inspired by the London Eye and through the judging process we saw both London and the structure itself in a new light. Like Tracey, we too were delighted with the amazing variety of interpretations our visitors were able to produce, reiterating the famous location’s place at the heart of London.”
Images were judged against a variety of criteria, including original views of the structure, the use of colour and composition and how well the photography captured the iconic status of the British Airways London Eye.
