Approaching Storm, by Glyn Rutter:
How DPNow Pictures of the Day are selected
Today's Picture of the Day depicts the transient beauty of a brooding landscape that is about to be disrupted by the power of an approaching storm. It was captured by Glyn Rutter, who posts ion the DPNow discussion forum and photo gallery under the name 'carman'.
There is so much to appreciate in this picture; the wilderness formed by the threatening sky, the wind-formed tree and the bleak landscape, plus the reassurance of the wall and gate that signifies nearby civilisation. The lighting is excellent, too.
Glyn explains that the picture underwent a number of developmentr stages: "The picture was taken on Barden Moor in the Yorkshire Dales 16th December 2006. I liked the look of the tree and the wall with old iron railings. The clouds were coming up to add drama. I originally made an HDR image from the RAW file blending 2 layers to add drama to the sky. This led to a mono conversion followed by a duotone version.
An Olympus E-300 was used, with the standard14-45 kit lens. Exposure was 1/320 @f/10. The lens was set to 14mm (28mm equiv), ISO 100.

Digital is just the latest chapter in Glyn's photography: "I have been an amateur photographer since the 1970's. Home darkroom etc. Mono film mostly. Using Minolta 700si I moved to digital in 2005. Starting with Minolta. Now use Fuji and Olympus."
Our next DPNow POTD will be published next Monday (21st May).
