Fred's Last, by Glyn Rutter:

How DPNow Pictures of the Day are selected

Glyn Rutter, better known as carman, on the DPNow discussion forum and photo galleries had a POTD recently with a landscape on a stormy day, but today we move to the coast and view the sad sight of a beached fishing boat, which doesn't look like it's going to be doing much more sailing.

According to Glyn: "The boat was lying on the shore at Aldeburgh." That's a historic village on the Suffolk coast in the east of England. Glyn adds; "I liked the forlorn look and the appropriate name "Fred's Last." It seems to me to speak of the problems of fisherman all round the coast.

"Interestingly a very similar image of this boat from the same viewpoint won a recent competition in a well known magazine. My image was taken with a Minolta Z2, in September 2005." The Minolta Dimage Z2 is a fairly modest consumer camera, so the result reflects well on Glyn's ability.

"I bought this camera to find out whether I should go digital or not," explains Glyn, who adds: "My main camera at the time was a Minolta 700si SLR. I was so impressed with digital compared to slides I then moved on to an Olympus E-300. This has just be replaced with an Olympus E-330. I have been an amateur photographer since the 1970s, originally mainly mono, a genre which now appeals to me again. Digital mono is my current passion."
