Winter Storm in Denmark, by Peder Winge:
How DPNow Pictures of the Day are selectedAll DPNow Picture of the Day selections are made from pictures that attract our attention in the DPNow users photo galleries. One particularly impressive gallery is the product of Peder Winge, whose
DPNow forum and
gallery user name is '
pewidane'. We always ask our POTD targets to provide some interesting information about their picture and themselves an this is usually provided in copious quantities. This time, however, the feedback was more brief than usual: pewidane is 65, retired and has been an amateur photographer for 30 years.
Luckily, pewidane's photography speaks volumes instead. We could have picked one of several for today's POTD, but the chillingly cold and bleak 'Winter Storm in Denmark' is what we settled on. The composition is fabulous, with the windswept tree, bereft if its leaves, providing evidence of the wintry conditions, with a grey backdrop contrasted by the perspective of the frosted and ploughed furrows in the field.

Finishing off the scene nicely is the flurry of snow that one can imagine being blown up off the field by a gust of icy wind, perhaps blowing along the field towards the camera.
Pewidane's gallery does reveal that he used a Nikon D70 and the exposure was 1/250th at f/8 with the camera set to an ISO sensitivity of 400. There is evidence of some over-processing in the image, but I always say that the picture comes first and technical perfection second and in this case the scene shown is very effective.
I managed to find out that
pewidane has his own website and it's definitely well worth a visit. I do hope Pewidane will continue to show us his photography via his DPNow gallery and even join in the discussions on the
DPNow forum, though it would be presumptuous of me to assume that his grasp of English is better than my Danish!
DPNow POTDs are selected exclusively from photos uploaded to the
DPNow photo gallery. If you haven't already done so, why not register for free access to both the DPNow discussion forum and photo gallery and show some of your own photos? A POTD could be one of yours one day!
