How DPNow Pictures of the Day are selected

Vote for November's Picture of the Month

Tinka, aka Dave, declares himself a relative novice in the digital photography scheme of things. But if you visit his gallery you will see that he's a very promising 'novice' indeed.

The picture I have selected is that of a figure strolling down the beach, away from the camer and to the right. It's an idyllic summer scene. The version featured here has been toned, but Dave has included a greyscale version in his gallery for comparison. When he originally displayed this image on the DPNow forum it rather split opinions concerning the toning. Details concerning his toning method in Photoshop can be found in his gallery.

And so what about our promising novice? Dave says: "I am a retired teenager of more mature years, retired on medical grounds. I have always been drawn to photography and to some extent Art, but only had time to be a 'Happy Snapper' of holidays and family occasions.

"I have in the past used many compact cameras, a very old 35mm SLR and a very clunky but fun Lubitol medium format camera. Since retiring, and the advent of Digital I now have more time to learn the technicalities and finer points of photography. I read alot of books and magazines, and follow the lessons within, both printed and videos, which I find great for learning."

Back to the picture, some felt the figure was placed incorrectly at the right side of the frame, feeling he should be walking towards the centre, not away from it. But I, for one, think the composition, as it is, with the figure having walked out of the centre, revealing the sparkling shore behind, works very well.

There are plenty more examples of Dave's work in his gallery.

Are you up to the task of being selected for the DPNow POTD? All you need to do is exhibit your pictures on the free DPNow photo gallery and maybe we'll be in touch!
