Mike Parr is a familiar and active member of the DPNow forum and only recently upgraded to a DSLR camera. He's been putting his new camera to excellent use and today's POTD caught my eye. It's a moody beach picture and although the sky is featureless, the foreground rocks and toning, along with the small figure, more than makes up for this.
Mike says: "I took the picture on a cloudy September afternoon this year whilst showing some friends my local area in Cornwall. I was using my Olympus E-500 and saw the lad sat quietly looking out to sea. The finished image is the centre third crop of the original. The overall tone was a result of the light and the brown colour of the surrounding rocks.
"I used CS2 to slightly saturate and enhance the tone and a little unsharp mask to bring up the foreground rocks. I was pleased to get such a result that required very little post processing work."

The beach scene was photographed at Crackington Haven, North Cornwall. Mike tells us the image was taken from the original Raw image file, the camera was set to f/7.1, 1/160th and at ISO 100. The lens used was an Olympus Digital Zuiko14-45mm kit lens, at 31mm (62mm 135 equivalence). Interestingly, the camera was set using a creative program with aperture priority exposure mode.
Mike has quite a few pictures in his DPNow gallery, that demonstrate how he is getting to grips with his new DSLR. Are you up to the task of being selected for the DPNow POTD? All you need to do is exhibit your pictures on the free DPNow photo gallery and maybe we'll be in touch!
