Tim Johnstone is one of a number of professional photographers that we see regularly on the DPNow discussion forum. Tim is a commercial photographer, specialising in stock images: "These I shoot on a project basis, under contract to a couple of stock agencies. Each project takes a couple of weeks - from receipt of the brief (which is usually the title of the project and some sample thumbnails), to choosing the models, locations, props, styling and costumes etc., through the shoots themselves and finally to the post-processing and uploading to the clients's servers. Then the next brief arrives..." You can see some of Tim's portfolio at his own site.

For the shot featured here, of the delightful Melissa, Tim used a Canon EOS-5D with a Canon 70-200mm f/4 EF L lens, zoom set to the classic portrait focal length of 100mm, shutter set to 1/125th @ f/8, ISO 160. A single strobe was bounced off a wall behind for strong, diffused (in Tim's words, "not quite high-key") lighting. Colours and contrast were then adjusted in Photoshop.

One of the endearing qualities of this shot is the happy and relaxed expression, especially in Melissa's eyes. The semi high-key effect works really well, too. An imaginative use of the camera angle rounds this picture off beautifully.
