Watch Study, by Danny Chau

Danny Chau lives for photography. Born in Hong Kong, he then spent his childhood in Sunderland, later moving with his parents and siblings to North London where he helped out with the family Chinese restaurant when he wasn't busy in his darkroom above the restaurant. He's the only Chinese Londoner I know with a Sunderland accent and he's now turned full circle and is back in Hong Kong with his own family. He left behind a vibrant business serving professional photographers, including the likes of the late Bob Carlos Clarke, first of all with his expert archival black and white printing talents and later he became an unrivalled expert on digital fine art colour printing. But Danny wasn't just great at producing exhibition quality hard copies of other's work; he's an accomplished photographer in his own right. I've selected a shot from a few years ago in Danny's gallery. It's a macro study of an Italian Haurex watch. Oh, did I mention Danny is a wristwatch aficionado? What I like about this shot is that the subject is interesting with its unusually sized watch face numbers and almost nothing is in perfect focus. Yet there is just enough focus to maintain the legitimacy of the image. The very narrow depth of field distorts the image in a rather pleasing way. The gold tone also works to give the blurred areas some substance. What we have here is a delightful example of an unusual use of creative limited depth of field.
