devilgas (real name Dave Shields) was one of the very first to register on the DPNow forum some 8-9 years ago. In that time Dave has demonstrated his mastery of a wide range of photographic disciplines from astrophotography to motorsport. In today's Picture of the Day pick we have a mountain biker captured in mid-leap. Dave explains:
"The photo was taken at a downhill mountain bike race event in the South Wales forests (Rheola) in September 2008!Having already captured a bunch of keepers, it was time to play. This shot was the result of using a basic radio trigger mounted to an off-camera flash unit, with the flash being tied to a tree. With spectators being present on the other side of the track, Ii needed to use first curtain flash to get their blur 'going in the right direction'. If I recall, I was using the Sigma 10-20mm lens and dialled in manual camera settings that would underexpose the background by about 1/2 a stop. I then played with the flash power to correctly expose for the riders. I think the exposure was around 1/10th of a second so that I could get some decent motion blur in the shots. It’s a shame the course marker tape was there, but to remove it in PP would be a lot of effort as it was visible in at least 100 photos.
"With action photography, I feel it's vital so show the fact that the subject is moving. With bikes/cars etc., it's too easy to get a 'car park' shot (where your subject might as well have been stationary in a car park) so getting some kind of movement, or some cue that tells you the subject is dynamic (e.g. /galleries/showphoto.php/photo/21990), is an absolute necessity. This was on the slightly more extreme end of the scale though!
