Mercedes, by Guy McLaren:
How DPNow Pictures of the Day are selectedGuy McLaren, who hails from South Africa, is a regular poster to the DPNow discussion forum and photo galleries, and he's ultra-keen on improving his photography. Despite being rather self-deprecating about his ability, Guy does show that he has a good eye for a picture. And his interesting angle on a 1960s Mercedes car is a good example.
I like the placement of the car on the left, showing just one side. In the void to the right there is a faint image of a much older automobile. The two complement each other surprisingly well and the warm toning of the monochrome image works well with the ages of the subject. In Guy's gallery you can find more experimentation with compositions featuring one-sided cars of varying ages.
Guy explains: "This image was taken in my Pre EOS days on a Kodak V360. I must admit I was rather pleased with the result. The picture was taken at the car museum at Casterbridge in White River, Mpumalanga South Africa. The car in the background is if, I recall, a 1904 DeDion. I may be wrong. The Mercedes is a 1960's 190. The Post Processing included selecting the background, fading and ink outlining in Photoshop. I must admit I don't remember the whole process."

Since upgrading to a DSLR, recently, Guy has been finding the going tougher than he had expected: "My photographic skills have either improved or not. The learning curve on the DSLR has been steep." But it doesn't look like this hiccup will hold him back: "My major forte is web design and development. The camera is an obsession that has grabbed me by the throat and won't let go."
Guy also has an eye to the future, with the approaching 2010 football world cup that is to take place in South Africa: "My major focus at present is my lowveldnet website, which will soon offer accommodation booking and a redesign. This website will allow you to see my part of the world. We are one of the 2010 football worldcup host cities."
