New Generation, by Stan:

How DPNow Pictures of the Day are selected

Stanley, who is better known as stan1968, on the DPNow discussion forum and photo galleries, has been featured on DPNow Picture of the Day once before. Back in November last year we were impressed by what Stan had achieved with his relatively modest Canon Powershot A610 compact point & shoot camera. Stan has since upgraded to a Canon EOS-400D digital SLR and the picture we're featuring today was taken using serious lump of lens in the form of a Sigma 70-300 Apo DG telephoto zoom.

You really need the reach of a lens like Stan's to get close to wildlife, like these blue tits. Stan has successfully captured a magical Spring moment, where a hungry chick is being fed by one of its parents, indeed, with a parental beak literally shoved down the little one's throat! What Stan has produced isn't a pixel-perfect shot that might drop your jaw in, say, Nature magazine, but it's appealing because it's a magical moment captured with a good degree of skill.

Stan says: "This particular picture was taken on a very windy and rainy day in my back garden. One of little birds came out of a nest for the very first time, getting its reward - FOOD !!"

Stan entered the picture in the recent DPNow Salon photo contest, kindly sponsored by Kingston Technology, which was had the theme of 'Generations'. If you like nature photography, Stan's gallery on DPNow is well worth a visit.

I'm not sure if there are blue tits where Stan orginally comes from, but he is a long way from home: "I am from Poland, I moved to England 6 months ago. I am 39 years old and as I am very interested in photography I do my favourite - I take a pictures of nature mostly."
