Kaydi @ 1 week old, by Ash:

How DPNow Pictures of the Day are selected

Ash is today's impressive contributor to the DPNow discussion forum and photo galleries to be featured in Picture of the Day. Ash has come up with a beautiful and unusual portrait of his baby great niece. The composition is thoughtful and striking and the use of what appears to be a subtly toned black and white finish is highly effective. It's a moving depiction of new life.

"This is my great niece Kaydi at one week old, taken on 31st March 2007," explains, Ash, adding: "Shot with natural light from the window, converted to b&w with a touch of sepia added. Exposure was f/2.8, 1/320 sec, ISO 400."

The picture was just waiting to be recorded, according to Ash: "With the way the light was softly glowing Kaydi's face, I thought at the time it could be something special, so the angle was important. Only after seeing it on the monitor did I think it had great potential."

We think that potential has been realised to the full and we hope Kaydi will one day come to appreciate what a superb image it is that Ash has created.

We always like to find out what makes our featured POTD photographers tick. This is what Ash says: "After an initial photographic frenzy of snapping anything and everything about four years ago, I've mellowed, somewhat, only taking my camera out with me when I have a specific project or assignment, and of course family get-togethers. I'd love my own studio at home and eventually spending my working hours cracking that shutter for bread and butter!" You can see Ash's other work on his excellent DPNow gallery.

And this is what Ash uses when a photo beckons: "I'm currently using a Nikon D200, Sigma 18-50mm ex & Sigma 150mm ex macro. After a very choppy time with various DSLRs, not really settling and feeling comfortable with any, I'm VERY happy with my D200, and I love the Sigma ex range of lenses. I think they have got it just right with the quality and cost balance. I also have a Canon A85 that I keep in the car."
