Blackbird Sunset, by Jerry Segraves:
How DPNow Pictures of the Day are selected See the previous POTD from yesterday, Monday, 20th Nov.
Vote for November's Picture of the Month
Today's Picture of the Day comes from the state of Kansas in the USA and,
Jerry, a very lucky commuter who gets to drive through a wildlife sanctuary every week.
Jerry says: "I live in Stafford, Kansas and work in Great Bend, Kansas, a 37 mile commute, so I have many great occasions to drive through Quivira National Wildlife Refuge on my way home from work.
"This particular shot was the winter before last and I saw the potential for a series of good sunset shots and, of course, the blackbirds come into roost by the hundreds of thousands in the winter.
"I took about twenty shots of this sunset and got this shot with a Canon EOS-20D with 100-400 IS Lens, focusing off to the side of the sun and recomposing with the sun in the frame while holding the shutter halfway down to maintain focus for the shot.
"It turned out very nice and is also featured on the new Wings & Wetlands National Scenic Byway website. This scenic byway includes Quivira and will be listed by National Geographic as one of the top 100 drives in America. Quivira is a bird and wildlife lover's paradise!"
