Sunsets and sunrises are one of the most commonly photographed scenes and we've had a few on the DPNow Picture of the Day. Today's POTD by Sue, AKA spl on the DPNow forum and gallery, is a sunset that caught my eye for a couple of reasons. First if all, it's striking in an abstract kind of way - the light areas of the frame are an intense crimson red. This slashes across an otherwise dark frame in a very dramatic fashion. But if you look in the dark areas you will see whisps of details that I feel add to the depth of the picture.
Secondly, Sue has clearly experimented to arrive at this result. If you have a look at the DNow gallery album Sue created for sunsets, there are different versions of the same view with alternative exposure settings and effects.
Sue is very modest about it all: "To be honest I didn't do very much at all - that evening the sunset went through a series of incredible transformations and I just couldn't stop clicking away. I probably did a minor tweak or two in Photoshop, but being an amateur, don't really record everything I do at the editing stage.
"I took the picture from the window (open window that is i.e. not through the glass) of my second floor flat in North Finchley, London, looking towards the South West. The flat has an amazing view, especially considering that it is right in London. My camera is a Pentax ist DL2 and I was using my old Takumar telephoto lens which goes up to 270mm with film cameras (probably a bit more with digital) I think I was probably using its longest setting."
