Your video guide to uploading images to the DPNow photo gallery
by Ian Burley

Here's how to get your photos onto the DPNow photo gallery

Last time we showed you how to get photos from your DPNow photo gallery into posts on the DPNow forum. So this video tutorial should really have come first; how to get your photos onto the gallery in the first place. Why post photos to DPNow gallery as well as or instead of Flickr or PhotoBucket, etc., anyway? Over the years we've recruited a good number of friendly and informative experts who are only too happy to comment, rate and critique other users' images in the gallery on the forum. With luck, you will get high quality feedback on your photos here. Secondly, if you would like to enter the regular themed forum salon contests (and you could win a 16GB Kingston Technology memory card in the process) or be considered for our regular Picture of the Day and Picture of the Month accolades, we exclusively source images from the DPNow gallery in both cases.

So here is the procedure for getting your photos from your computer into your gallery space - and there are no charges whatsoever. All you need to do first is register on the DPNow discussion forum as the forum and gallery are integrated:

To see this tutorial at normal screen resolution, select full screen mode and HD (720P) format.

A few extra tips

  • We recommend that you post images at around 800 pixels in width or if you are posting an upright image, then around 700 pixels tall. This is ideal for Web viewing and also means the file sizes don't need to be too large ~ around 200K is normally ideal.
  • After resizing to the size you will be using it's normally a good idea to gently sharpen the image, or you may want to consider using a sharpened resize option if your photo editor offers it.
  • Please try to retain exif metadata (embedded information that logs the camera settings and other information. And if you rename the image to something meaningful and include a reasonably detailed caption and description you will encourage more people to look at and comment on your photo.
  • To minimise colour management issues in web browsers that don't support colour management, don't use Adobe RGB colour space - use sRGB instead.
  • If you post a lot of images and need extra storage space, we're only too happy to help - just send request to [email protected].
  • Please try not to delete images unless you really must. This is especially so if your images have been featured in forum posts in the past as these pages will be left with big holes in them.
  • We encourage all our visitors to comment on and rate photos in the gallery; to do this you do need to be a forum member and to be logged in. Any images that have a reasonably good average rating will be eligible to be shown at random on the front page of DPNow - look for the gallery box near the top right of the page.

Once you have mastered posting your photos to the gallery, do have a look at our video tutorial on getting your gallery photos shown in the forum too.

I'm sure I'm speaking for many in hoping to see your photos on the DPNow gallery very soon!
