PROUD GALLERIES presents FOREVER 27

Launch night: 20th August
Exhibition: 21st August – 12th October 2008 © Elliott Landy

Proud Camden presents Forever 27, a portrait of the much mythologised ‘27 Club’, the group of ill-fated rock stars whose lives have been tragically cut short at the age of 27. Featuring iconic images from a collaboration of world-renowned rock photographers, Proud Camden will present a definitive look at Rock & Roll’s most infamous member’s club. From a group of over 30 musicians belonging to the Club, Proud Camden will focus on the five most legendary, depicted through iconic and never before seen images. Featuring many striking images of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones and Kurt Cobain, this revealing show promises to celebrate their talent and shed fresh light on their short lives and mysterious, untimely deaths.

Whilst Brian Jones, founding member of the Rolling Stones drowned in a swimming pool in 1969, the legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix went on to overdosed on sleeping pills in 1970, just months before singer Janis Joplin also overdosed on heroin. Doors frontman Jim Morrison followed, dying in mysterious circumstances in 1971 and most recently Kurt Cobain, Nirvana’s notorious singer and songwriter, committed suicide in 1994.

In a year that has already seen the unexpected death of Hollywood actor Heath Ledger, this poignant exhibition will honour these gifted musicians with a showcase of work from some of the world’s greatest music photographers including images from the much celebrated Elliott Landy, whose pictures are renowned the world over. Alongside these Proud Central will also present work by seminal 1960s photographer Phil Townsend as well as Steve Double, Jill Gibson, the late Joel Brodsky and, newly confirmed, world renowned photographer Gered Mankowitz.

This show will be a must-see for anyone who has been touched by the music of these great artists, whilst introducing new fans to their work and exploring the hidden depths of a talent that has taken many a star to an ill-fated end, forcing us to examine the effects of fame and the consequences of the rock star lifestyle.
