Mencap announces photography competition winners

Wedding day celebrations, disability demonstrations, fun at the beach and ambitions fulfilled were just some of the subjects of the winning entries from Mencap’s Snap! photography competition 2008. As well as receiving a Fujifilm digital camera, the winners will have their photographs displayed at the acclaimed Proud Camden gallery in London, from 19 June to 6 July.

An amazing 1,100 entries were received by the UK’s leading learning disability charity this year, which was a record amount. Judges for this year’s competition included, Rankin, iconic fashion and celebrity photographer; Alex Proud, founder of Proud Galleries in London; and Eamonn McCabe, former picture editor of the Guardian.

Rankin comments: “Using photographs and stories together gives a unique insight into a person’s life. The judging was a really tough job, as the standard of entries was outstanding and I was really impressed by the creativity shown.”

Snap! is Mencap’s photo and story competition, now in its sixth year. The competition showcases the talents of people with a learning disability through photographs and inspiring stories to increase understanding of learning disability by those closest to it. The photographs are either taken by or feature someone with a learning disability and are accompanied by a short descriptive story.

The winners will be presented with their prize at a glittering, star-studded awards evening in June at Proud Camden. Snap! is sponsored by Fujifilm and supported by The Sorrell Foundation. To see this year’s winners and for more information on Snap! visit www.mencap.org.uk/snap
