General Imaging, the new digital camera arm of the huge and diversified manufacturing company, GE (once known as General Electric), may only be just over a year old, but it's already staking a strong claim for a sector of the digital camera market. The GE brand introduced no less than nine new models for 2008, including the slim eight megapixel E840s model, an example of which we are giving away to a lucky DPNow visitor during May.

The E840s is no ordinary 8MP compact digital camera. It has a high resolution 230,000 pixel 2.7 inch colour LCD screen, for a start. And it features a panorama stitching mode for those extra-wide landscape shots. Most impressive of all, face, smile and blink detection are featured. Face detection ensures the camera focuses on the people in your picture instead of distant background that renders your subjects out of focus. Smile detection enables the camera to automatically take a picture when it senses that a face in your field of view starts to smile. Blink detection warns you after a shot if there is a possibility that the subject has managed to close their eyes at just the wrong moment, so you can re-take the picture safely again.

The features don't stop there. Electronic image stabilisation is included, as is an ISO sensitivity range that goes as high as ISO 1600, for better headroom in dark situations without needing to resort to flash.
