Bald Eagle, by Stephen Anstey:

How DPNow Pictures of the Day are selected

Stephen Anstey has been a DPNow stalwart since almost the very beginning fo the site. You will find him practically every day on the DPNow discussion forum and photo galleries helping others and showing is excellent photography. We were denied Stephen's presence for a couple of weeks last month as he was on holiday in, of all places, Alaska. He brought back a superb record of his trip, including this remarkable shot of a bald eagle.

"This is a bald eagle, America's national bird, landing on a navigation Buoy," explains Stephen, adding: "I managed to get it just right as it landed. Obviously the shot was anticipated and I had been following the bird in the camera viewfinder, using the 100-400mm lens with a 1.4x extender. This gives an equivalent focal length of 728mm which is over 14x magnification!!

"As it came near to landing I fired off a half second burst of four shots. The second one nailed it. Though the shot was taken at 1/500th sec, the IS on the lens obviously had a positive effect. Definitely one of those seminal moments." This shot generated a lot of feedback on the forum when it was posted there.

"There were so many scenes of spectacular glaciers and mountains, we were so lucky to see them at their best. I remember the naturalist and Park Ranger on board the ship saying that you would never see them better, it was as good as it gets. They were literally urging people to get on deck to see the John Hopkins Glacier in Glacier Bay. Frankly it was quite a humbling experience, and ranks high along with The Grand Canon, Monument Valley, Bryce Canyon etc as places you should see before you die."
