Back from Alaska

Arrived back in Blighty yesterday evening, and I have to say it was a lot warmer in Fairbanks on Saturday and Sunday than it was here. Saturday afternoon the temperature near the hotel reached 89F unbelievable for May and its not a lot more than 150miles from the Arctic Circle

Anyway we had a great time, the scenery up the Alaskan coast is awesome, I hate that word but it is. College Fiord and Glacier Bay are on a par with The Grand Canyon IMHO.

Have seen a variety of wildlife though often from not as close as we had hoped for, but then you take what you get when travelling on a ship, coach and train much of the time.

Here is a shot to start with of a Bald Eagle alighting the top of a navigation buoy. More will follow in due course.

Brilliant shot. The tight crop, the tilted composition and the sharp, crisp detail - albeit still with a sense of movement from the eagle - gel perfectly to make this one a winner. Was this taken with the big daft lens you bought for the trip?

Indeed it was and it has to be said its a great lens, just so bloomin heavy to be carrying around too far. It created a stir whenever I pulled it out and some admiring looks from other Canon users

This too was taken from the ship with the same lens as we cruised in Glacier Bay. Its the John Hopkins Glacier. The Park Ranger on Board said this was about as good as it gets in terms of conditions, we were so lucky to get the sun and cloud free peaks with the snow

Yo Yorkie. So you had a good trip then, eh.

You'll be ok carrying that Bazooka for miles and miles if you get yersell an ErgoRest or some other shoulder or chest pod. The crowds won't just gaze at you in awe - they'll be asking for yer autograph inaal.

Stephen I am envious of you being there in Alaska. A large percentage of the reading I do is based on mountain climbing and have just completed one that included the wonderful Mt McKinley and also the Devils Thumb. The eagle shot is a cracker and the timing was precise.

Thanks Tom, I can do Mt McKinley too We stayed in the McKinley National Park which overlooked the McKinley range, unfortunately it was damp and miserable and the Mts were in mist. However the next day we moved to the Denali NP and the weather was great so we saw "The Mountain" I liked this shot as it showed some of the landscape of Denali. I have another more zoomed in but prefer this one.

BTW though it doesn't look it McKinley is 20,320ft high, the highest in N. America
