The star of today's DPNow Picture of the Day is a young fox that frequents the garden of a DPNow forum regular who goes by the name of '
Words'.
UK government estimates from the mid 1990s indicated that there were around a quarter of a million adult foxes in Britain, producing nearly double their number in offspring each year and 33,000 of the adult population lived in urban areas.
Words explains: "This young male fox has been visiting my garden all year and is very comfortable with the camera. Hence I was able to pose this shot (so far as you can with a wild animal)."
"The fox is at the top of some stone steps, and I was a couple of steps lower, maybe 3-4 feet away. I set the camera to minimum flash (minus two full points), and angled the shot against the night sky to produce a virtually black background."

Words adds: "To avoid the risk of eye shine (
a yellowy-green equivalent to red-eye in humans -Ed.) I kept the fox slightly out of centre-frame. The final image is a very slight crop to pull the fox more to the left."
The foxy visitors to Words' garden have been photographed for two years:
"Initially with a £99 point and shoot, and then with a Canon S2 IS (which was used for this shot). What started as some very basic documentation of our fox visitors has fuelled a more extensive interest in photography, plus an extensive website (http://www.permuted.org.uk/fox) and blog (http://my.opera.com/Words/blog/)." A DSLR camera is next on the Words shopping list.
