How DPNow Pictures of the Day are selected

I confess that when I first saw this picture by Bill Birchall, I immediately contacted him to ask if he had pasted the sea gull on top of the Alaskan scenery. His answer was quite emphatic: "I can categorically assure you that it was one, very fortunate shot and certainly not 'manipulated' in any way."
Bill adds: "The shot was taken with a Kodak 4530 digital camera on the deck of the Dawn Princess, when cruising Glacier Bay, Alaska. It was a recent trip to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary.
I had taken numerous shots of the glaciers in the hope that I could catch a shot of the ice crashing into the water. Unfortunately, no luck there, but plenty when the seagull encroached on my shot, just as I clicked. The only change that I made to the original, was to crop it, so that it brought the picture nearer.
It's a remarkable shot and a most worthy POTD as the sea gull has obliged almost perfectly. Thanks to Bill's crop, it fits beautifully in the frame, making a picture with a lot of drama with its mountainous backdrop descending into the bay. The lighting also adds a kind of luminosity to the gull's wings and underside too.

Bill has been retired for 8 years and was a Company Secretary for a very large retail company. He says: "In that time have managed to indulge my interests, which include:- travelling the world, computing, photography, reading, etc." Bill is also the secretary of a local over-50s club and organises monthly trips for his members. He lives with his wife, Una, in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England, not very far from DPNow's home base in Hemel Hempstead, just over the county border in Hertfordshire.
