Release Issued by ICI Imagedata:

ICI Imagedata announces winners of 2005/6 Olmec Student Digital Photographer of the Year Awards & Independent on Sunday Reader Awards

The winners of the Olmec Student Digital Photographer of the Year were presented with their awards at a prestigious ceremony at ICI’s headquarters in London, along with winners of the national Independent on Sunday Reader Awards.

STUDENT AWARDS
Launched in 2002 by ICI Imagedata to promote the creative use of digital photography and showcase the work of up-and-coming talent, the Student Awards are open to students studying photography as part of a college or university course.

Over the years, the competition has produced a wealth of exciting, creative images and this year was no exception – with a record number of colleges taking part and an excellent standard of entries across the three competition categories: PEOPLE, PLACES & STILL LIFE.

The Winner
The overall winner of the 2005/6 Olmec Student Digital Photographer Competition was Katinka Goldberg, a second year student of photography at Edinburgh College of Art, with her black and white portrait ‘Nadia’.

Katinka used a Nikon 070 Camera to capture her image. Her ambition is to become a documentary photographer after completing her studies.

The Judges were impressed with the atmosphere, style and emotion generated by the image.

Category Winners
PEOPLE – ‘Nadia’ by Katinka Goldberg, Edinburgh College of Art
PLACES – ‘Solitude’ by Cameron McMurdo, Reid Kerr College, Paisley
STILL LIFE – ‘AWAC Detail’ by Michael Reeves, Stevenson College, Edinburgh.

The Prizes
Over £3,000 in Cash plus photographic accessories
All Category Winners were awarded with £250 cash plus a selection of Olmec professional photo papers.
The overall winner was presented with an additional £2,000 cash.
The winning college was presented with a selection of Olmec photo papers.

READER AWARDS
In conjunction with the Independent on Sunday Review, ICI Imagedata launched a national competition this year – open to all readers, with the same entry categories as the Student Competition.

Unlike the Student Awards, which focus on the work of student photographers, anyone was welcome to take part – whether professional, keen amateur or complete beginner.

The Winner
The overall winner of the Independent on Sunday Reader Awards was Graham Stouph from Newcastle with his image ‘Car Park, Newcastle’.

Graham is a lecturer at Newcastle College.

The Judges were impressed with the technical skill, movement and composition of his image.

Category Winners
PEOPLE – ‘Soho Pride’ by Craig Howe from Bournemouth.
PLACES – ‘Car Park, Newcastle’ by Graham Stouph from Sunderland.
STILL LIFE – ‘Floating Oranges’ by Nicola Fearnley from Lancaster.

The Prizes
Digital camera, accessories & photographic media

All Category Winners were presented with a Digital Camera Kit and Olmec photo papers.

The overall winner was presented with a Canon EOS Camera, camera bag, printer and Olmec photo papers.

ICI Imagedata is one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of digital imaging products, including photo papers and D2T2 photo printers.

The Judging Panel for the 2005/06 Awards comprised Simon Bainbridge, Editor of British Journal of Photography, Richard Mildenhall, Award-winning Photographer, and – from the Independent on Sunday Review – Victoria Lukens, Picture Editor, and David Sandison, Staff Photographer.
