This week, DPNow friend and consultant, Danny Chau, launched his new brainchild; da Vinci Fibre Gloss archival ink-jet printer paper. Danny has spent a couple of years working with a UK-based fine art photo paper manufacturer to formulate the right paper base and surface coatings to produce a serious ink-jet alternative to the classic traditional high-silver content bromide heavy weight black and white glossy print that could only be produced in a dark room. And he says it works remarkably well for colour printing too.

Seeking traditional bromide wet print mono quality from an ink-jet
With over 20 years of exhibition quality archival black and white dark room printing under his belt, and I should know because I've known Danny since the early 80s, Danny made a very successful move to digital colour printing and built a renowned reputation for his digital colour management consultancy work. But along the way he has long felt there was one piece in the ink-jet jigsaw missing; this was a paper capable of matching the depth and tone of a great mono bromide print. His wish for such a thing has been far from unique, as many DPNow forum discussions can attest.

Called da Vinci Fibre Gloss, according to Danny's own tests, the new paper exhibits the widest colour gamut he's yet seen on an ink-jet paper. A wide colour gamut is essential to enable the custom profiling of a paper and printer combination which will enable the production of the best colour results, but it's also critical to achieve the kind of black and white tonal quality that many have been seeking for a long time.

How good is it really
We're in the process of testing the paper ourselves and we can't yet comment (this paragraph will be updated as soon as the tests are complete). However, Danny's reputation is not built on hype and dodgy claims, so we are pretty confident his enthusiasm for da Vinci Fibre Gloss is justified.

The importance of profiling
To obtain the best monochrome neutrality (in most printers black and grey tones are composed of at least some colour ink) and to avoid the phenomenon of metamerism, whereby the hue of the greys in a mono print visibly alter in according to different lighting conditions, custom profiling is also essential. So to get the best out of da Vinci Fibre Gloss paper, you should invest in the generation of a custom profile for your specific printer in conjunction with this paper.

Save money and help DPNow fund itself at the same time
The going rate for the best quality professional printer profiling services, using highly specialised spectrophotometers and rather expensive profile generating software, is £100 (plus VAT) - per profile. This is probably out of the reach of many DPNow visitors who aren't professional photographers, so we have persuaded Danny to halve his profiling charge for a limited time. Until the end of March the price for profiling your printer for da Vinci Fibre Gloss paper is reduced by half to £50 + VAT and the offer is only available if you register below. On top of that, all sales of da Vinci Fibre Gloss to DPNow visitors who register will generate a small but useful commission that can be reinvested in the site.
