Story updated, 26th May:

  • DPN has learned that Kodak has finally abandoned the Compact Flash memory card standard in its consumer camera range. All future consumer models, like the new CX4230, will support SD/MMC cards.
  • Version 2.0 of Kodak’s EasyShare software, which includes a powerful photo file database manager aimed at non-technical users, will be made available as a public download soon after the new CX4230 starts to ship in June.
  • While the new CX4230 does sport a 3X optical zoom lens and portait mode camera orientation sensing and even the ability to assign email addresses to photos in the camera, once again, there is no movie clip mode. Kodak told DPN that it chooses final specifications based on cost factors and perceived customer requirements.

Enhanced EasyShare adds photo management features to cameras

Kodak UK has today announced details of the next generation of its EasyShare technology. Its debut will come in July when the latest EasyShare camera, the CX4230 (above), becomes available.

Kodak is currently undergoing a monumental and difficult corporate task of bridging the traditional analogue photography market and the new digital market. The company has decided that its best hope in the high volume consumer market is to maximise its reputation for supplying easy to use digital cameras.

Work has been done to further simplify the EasyShare software and add features to the camera to start the EasyShare process even before the camera is docked to its host PC. Docking can be via an EasyDock II station, which is a £59.99 optional extra, or simply via USB cable.

You can tell the camera who you want to email photos to

The new CX4230 camera lets the user tag images stored in the camera for printing or distribution via email to friends and family, etc. You can even assign destination email addresses to individual pictures using a new EasyShare button on the camera. The CX4230 can store up to 32 email addresses.

Once the camera is docked, the camera’s store of pictures is automatically transferred to the host PC. Kodak’s latest EasyShare software will automatically deal with photos marked in the camera for email distribution. The software also offers streamlined printing to your local printer or online printing service. A simplified, but feature rich, image database system shields the user from the complexity of using the computer’s basic file management.

With an eye on the market for home printing via ink-jet printer, there is built in support for printing onto Kodak ink-jet photo paper using a large selection of photo ink-jet printers.

3X optical zoom for new 2MP CX4230

The CX4230 will be the first camera from Kodak to deliver the new EasyShare system. It’s a 2 megapixel model that, unusually for a Kodak digicam in recent times, sports a 3X optical zoom lens. The CX4230 will be priced £199.99 inc.VAT when it hits the shops in early July.
