Today, our featured photographer on the DPNow Picture of the Day is from Yorkshire, is a long time forum moderator here, and is registered on the DPNow forum and galleries as Stephen. Today's shot is one from Stephen's archive, taken an age ago, in digital terms.
Stephen explains: "The 'Signing' was taken in 2004. I was using a Canon 10D then. I was in Manchester with a friend and we were doing our best at some street photography. The precinct in front of the Selfridges building was a great place photograph people and I got a few decent shots. These women were apparently deaf and were signing to each other, but it was clear that the tale being 'signed' was amusing and I manages to capture a rather expressive moment in this picture.
"I'm not entirely happy with the shot however. The girl on the left has her back to the camera, and the one signing has most of her face obscured. This of course was my fault, I simply was not in the ideal position. In these sort of situations you have to be quick though in order to capture a moment and sometimes you are not in the ideal position.
"The selective toning was my effort to emphasise the hands and make it clear what was happening in the scene. I'm not a great fan of such toning, the photo should speak for itself, but hey, this was 2004 and it was the fashionable thing to do."
