Autumns carpet, by Maurice

On the face of it, today's DPNow.com Picture of the Day may look fairly unremarkable. However, this picture by Maurice Brehaut, also known as Mowgli on the DPNow forum, has grown on me. The depth of thecarpet of autumn leaves is rather remarkable, and the colour is a delight. And I really like the limited depth of field, meaning the foreground is in focus, while the distance is softly blurred. So this is a very simple composition, but I feel it's greater than the sum of the parts. Anyway, how can we NOT have a POTD with an autumn theme at this time of year?
Maurice explains: "I took this picture in Saumarez Park, one of our larger parks in Guernsey (famous for the 'Battle of flowers' held each year in August). We have an photgraphy interclub competition coming up in the early part of next year and the topic is 'Saumarez Park'.
"I was there last Saturday with the wife's Casio Exilim EZ1000 point and shoot, taking a look around. I found this scene just under some trees and (as I put when I posted the picture) one of the presets in the camera was 'autumn leaves". When I uploaded it to my computer I was amazed at the colours. I decided to share it with all at DP Now rather than leave it till competition time."
And I'm glad you did, Maurice! You may be wondering how a compact like a Casio EZ1000 managed such limited depth of field. Well, Maurice admitted that he blurred the background. Good job!
And finally, if you think there is a certain something about Maurice, I can reveal he is the older brother of Peter Brehaut, also of Guernsey and the featured photographer on our POTD last Monday!
You can see more of Maurice's work in his DPNow gallery - and it's well worth a look.
Would you like one of your pictures featured on DPNow's POTD?
We are always on the look out for great pictures posted to the user-galleries here on DPNow. POTDs are selected from the gallery and featured every week day. The gallery facility here is completely free; all you need to do is register as a user on our discussion forum and you will get an automatic 25MB of space, which is good for around 125 pictures uploaded at web resolution, about 200K per picture. At the time of writing we had just over 10,000 pictures on the galleries and it's well worth a browse.
Picture of the month
At the end of each month we will select our favourite image of the month and declare a Picture of the Month.
