Richard Crowe is our featured photographer on the DPNow.com Picture of the Day this time. His study of a house and sky beyond am unpainted picket fence is an excellent example of an image with the added depth of enhanced dynamic range, achieved through the post processing technique of HDR, or High Dynamic Range. Basically this involves taking several pictures, each with an incremental change in exposure over the previous one. Special HDR software then combines all the images to produce a composite image that exhibits unusually detailed shadows, mid tones, and highlights. Some feel it's an unnatural effect, but few would argue that it can be very eye-catching.
Richard, who has already been honoured in our Golden Gallery, was surprised to be picked for POTD: "Thanks for the vote of confidence! I tend to be a little too self critical sometimes!"
"We asked picture to take us through his picture: "I took this photo quite a while ago and I had to think form a moment where it was! It was taken in Killyleagh which is a small town on the banks of Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland. It was taken with my Canon 30D and the 17-40mm L.. As I recall I had been taking photos of Killyleagh Castle and around the harbour area. There was quite a bit of building work going on and this photo is of one of the houses that was just being built. There was no real planning in it - I just liked saw this composition and shot it! I am not one for studying the rules of photography - I just like to go by my eye. If I like it I shoot it!
"This was taken at a time when I had just started tinkering with HDR and I think that I was still at an experimental stage with this one! I would most likely do it differently now, but I still like the result I achieved with it then."
We always like to learn about our featured photographers. About himself, Richard says: "I'm from Belfast, Northern Ireland and have been taking photos seriously since I got my first DSLR 3 years ago. I like taking landscapes, however, recently, I have been experimenting with street photography. I enjoy the buzz of taking pics of people in a street environment and trying to capture them naturally and unawares. I have also recently set up a new photography website and am currently populating it with photos - www.richardcrowe.co.uk.
