College hosts photography of terror

LCC is hosting an exhibition of work by a top American photographer William Deering. Titled The Uncertainty of Terror, it coveys images that express some of the feelings experienced by Londoners on 7 July 2005 during the terrorist attacks.

William was on his way to a meeting at the LCC on a Piccadilly line train that day not long before the attacks took place. When his meeting ended he found himself outside the building seeing, feeling, watching an act of terrorism unfold. All modes of transport were unavailable, the tube was closed, the buses were not running and hailing a cab was impossible. That experience gave him the idea for creating a series of photos on the theme of “uncertainty and terror.”

He says “Terror, or the threat of it, is the generally an intense fear mostly carried out without any real predictability. These images taken in the past couple of years are a reflection of that experience.”

William is currently a lecturer at the University of Delaware in Newark, USA, and is Director of the Study Abroad programme to London. His work has taken him throughout the United States, Far East and Europe, involving a number of projects relating to design and fine art and his awards have been extensive over the last 30 years.

The exhibition will opens for general view on Friday 11 January and will be displayed in the LCC’s Eckersley Gallery until Friday 25 January.
