Something That I’ll Never Really See:
Contemporary Photography from the V&A

artsdepot is pleased to announce this unique opportunity to see highlights from the V&A’s contemporary photography collection.  The exhibition brings some of the most exciting contemporary photographs from the V&A’s internationally renowned collection to artsdepot’s Apthorp Gallery.

artsdepot will be the only London venue to host this touring exhibition. Something That I’ll Never Really See comprises over 40 images by different photographers, covering a wide range of subject matter, from landscapes to portraits. It includes work by leading artists Richard Billingham, David Hockney, Cindy Sherman, and Hannah Starkey. The exhibition also features iconic images such as Nan Goldin’s striking image Jimmy Paulette on David’s Bike from the influential series The Ballad of Sexual Dependency.

The exhibition offers an overview of last two decades of contemporary photography, exploring many diverse themes represented in current photographic practise.  By recreating an image which has been made familiar to us through mass reproduction Vik Muniz’s Action Photo 1 challenges our pre-existing knowledge of imagery. In this case, an image of Jackson Pollock by Hans Namuth, is drawn in chocolate syrup and then re-photographed.  Sculpture Freize (a photograph taken using a camera obscura built from a V&A display case) by Edgar Lissel is an example of a work that evokes the alchemic nature of early photography. Corinne Day’s photograph of Kate Moss wonderfully illustrates the symbiotic relationship between art and fashion photography.

The exhibition title is inspired by Gavin Turk’s photograph of the same name. The title plays upon a number of ideas: when looking at a photograph the viewer sees a moment in time that has been captured and cannot be re-lived. The subjects of the photograph are people and places that most of us will never see in real life.
