Three contemporary photographers whose work explores ideas of portraiture, tradition and figuration discuss their practice and key issues in contemporary photography.

Sarah Jones subverts conventions in portraiture and still life in complex and finely crafted images that explore the many themes including abstraction, composition and the relationship to place. She has exhibited internationally - most recently at Tate Modern in Street and Studio: An Urban History of Photography - and is a tutor at the Royal College of Art and the 13th Bradford Fellow of Photography.

Tom Hunter's reputation has been established by blurring the line between portraiture, social documentary and art history with a series of engaging and provocative photographic reworkings of paintings from the past. He won the Kobal Photographic Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery in 1998 and has exhibited nationally and internationally including at the National Gallery in 2005-6.

Wiebke Leister's photographic work investigates the nature of photographic portraiture beyond the limits of the individual ´likeness´ and her PhD research project into the nature of the smile in photography was entitled ´Unjoyful Laughter and the Non-Likeness of Photographic Portraiture'. She is currently Senior Lecturer in Photography at the London College of Communication.
