Verbatim first to launch dual-layer with 8x write speed

Faster, further, Verbatim DVD-R DL 8x; Storage expert becomes first to launch dual-layer media with 8x write speed

Verbatim is the first storage manufacturer to launch dual-layer, DVD-RR , with 8x write speed and storage capacity of 8.,5 GB data, music or film. The burn takes just 15 minutes to write four hours of video in DVD quality to the Verbatim 8x DVD-R DL, some 10 minutes faster than the previous fastest write speed of 4x media.

Eschborn, October 2006 – Verbatim is once again ahead of the market becoming the first to launch Dual-layer media in DVD-R format with 8x write speed. The two layers on the writeable side of the media can store a total 8.5 GB of data, music and film. A DL-compatible burner takes just 15 minutes to write four hours of video in DVD quality to the 8x DVD-R DL - the fastest 4x media took 25 minutes.

Available from all Verbatim stockists the 8x DVD-R DL are available individually or in 5-pack jewel cases at a the suggested retail price of £ 9.00 each or £ 39.00 for the five packl.

The Verbatim 8x DVD-R DL media are now in stores and are available individually or in 5-pack jewel cases. They cost €4.49 each or five for €22.49 (RRP incl. VAT).

Verbatim say that the key to the whole dual-layer process is the special pigment on the recording layer, which allows for high performance without diminishing the disc reliability and compatibility. Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (MKM), Verbatim's parent company developed the coating and are the production method that forms the grooves thus controlling the rerading and writing process.

While Verbatim acknowledge that speed is important, Torsten Leye, marketing manager optical at Verbatim said, "Speed should never be at the cost of quality. We've uundertaken exhaustive tests on new media using and conventional hardware hardware

Together with parent Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (MKM), Verbatim is the first manufacturer to produce a DVD-R disk with dual-layer technology with 8x read and write speeds. Key to the whole process is a special pigment for the recording layer, which promises high performance without diminishing the media’s reliability and compatibility. In addition, the development of sophisticated coating techniques and a special production method to form the grooves controlling the reading and writing process were required.
