Vote for November's Picture of the Month

Wild Images, real name Callie, is the photographer behind today's action bird shot of a Lilac Breasted Roller at take-off. This colourful bird is, apparently, not uncommon in the South Africa bush veldt, "but always a pleasure to behold," says Callie.

Callie adds: "He entertained us at a small pan in Kruger National Park. This is the type of photography that I am really trying for, and 1 in 1000 times or so, you hit it just about right. Shooting birds from take-off is the most difficult thing I have tried, and am still trying."

This shot was taken from inside a car. Clearly, Callie is upping expectations from his photography: "Birds on the wing is so so, especially the large ones, but the small perishers <30 cm are extremely difficult to nearly impossible."

If you agree with me that this is a superb bird shot, you'll be in for a treat if you visit Callie's gallery - it's packed with more amazing birds and animals from South Africa.

A Nikon D200, fitted with a 100-200 f/4 VR-S lens was used by Callie to net this picture, though Callie does admit it has been cropped quite a bit - not that this has affected our enjoyment of his picture!

If you visit Callie's gallery you can see the picture above in a larger size, plus more fantastic South African bush wildlife photos, including the shooting information for each picture.
