Unshakeable zoom power with the µ (mju) 740 and µ (mju) 750
Release Issued by Olympus:

Zoom in for a closer look

London, 23 August 2006 – Photographers who’d like to get a little closer to their subjects should take a good look at the µ (mju) 740 and µ (mju) 750 from Olympus. Both cameras feature a new 5x optical zoom – great for scrutinising objects a bit further away – and a 7.1 million pixel CCD for photos bursting with detail. Remarkably, this extra zoom power has not affected the size, as both models feature a sleek, ultra-compact design and weatherproof* metal body – trademarks of the µ (mju) series.

To make the most of that more powerful zoom, the µ (mju) 750 also boasts another innovation in the Dual Image Stabilization, for the ultimate safeguard against camera shake. As the photo is taken, a mechanical image stabiliser compensates for camera shake by carefully adjusting the position of the 7.1 million pixel CCD. At the same time, a high maximum ISO value gives further protection against blur – a feature also included in the µ (mju) 740. For exceptional shooting in low light or at night, the µ (mju) 740 and µ (mju) 750 are equipped with BrightCapture Technology, which is now also available in Movie mode. These new models will be in UK stores in September, priced at around Ł260.00 for the µ (mju) 740, and Ł300.00 for the µ (mju) 750.

The Olympus µ (mju) 740 and µ (mju) 750 look gorgeous and are available in a choice of colours – Moonlight Silver, Twilight Blue or Sunset Red for the µ (mju) 740, and Starry Silver or Midnight Black for the µ (mju) 750. Their gently tapered design makes them a treat to hold, but anyone thinking that their good looks are just skin deep should beware! Inside these beauties are a beast of a lens and a 7.1 million pixel CCD that together deliver razor-sharp photographs.

The versatile 5x, 1:3.3-5.0 zoom lens on the µ (mju) 740 and µ (mju) 750 is equivalent to 36-180mm on a 35mm camera, great for capturing more general scenes and then zooming in to scrutinise specific details. So that shots always display the sharpness their subjects deserve, the µ (mju) 750 has been equipped with Dual Image Stabilization. This remarkable feature uses a new mechanical image stabiliser to avoid blurring caused by camera shake. A built-in gyro sensor detects camera movement and makes minute adjustments to the CCD position to compensate. The second safeguard against image blur is also featured in the µ (mju) 740. This is the selection of high ISO values to increase shutter speeds, thereby reducing the effect of unintentional camera movement.

Thanks to Olympus BrightCapture Technology, framing and taking photos under low-light conditions is no longer a haphazard affair, as the high contrast 6.4cm LCD (with 215,000 pixels!) is around 4x brighter than normal, making aiming the camera significantly easier.

BrightCapture Technology also enhances shooting capabilities in a wide range of challenging lighting situations – without always needing to use the flash. This makes capturing the true atmosphere of candle-lit dinners, indoor parties or other night scenes much easier. And even at the high maximum ISO value of 1600 photographers can still take full advantage of the entire 7.1 million pixel resolution. The benefits of BrightCapture Technology are no longer reserved for still image capture, as it is now available in Movie mode for the very first time.

Achieving great results on the µ (mju) 740 and µ (mju) 750 couldn’t be easier. As well as Auto shooting mode, Olympus has equipped these models with a choice of 23 scene modes (including Portrait, Landscape and Sports) that cover just about every common photo situation. Operating these cameras is largely intuitive, but should photographers ever need reminding which menu option to select, they can turn to the built-in Guide Function for help. This explains the cameras’ main functions directly on the LCD screen and is a real boon if the user manual isn’t to hand.

Photos and movie files can be stored either on the cameras’ internal memories or on optional xD-Picture Cards. And so that photo shoots can continue over long periods without the need to recharge, both models come with a high-performance LI-42B lithium-ion battery and charger. Fitting in with today’s more active lifestyles, an underwater case is available for either the µ (mju) 740 or µ (mju) 750. The Olympus PT-034 Underwater Case will take the cameras down to depths of 40m, so that even creatures of the deep won’t escape the gaze of that 5x zoom!

Great ergonomic design, a choice of colours, exceptional zoom performance and BrightCapture Technology. It may be the µ (mju) 750 that features the mechanical image stabiliser, but both models are unshakeable when it comes to looks and versatility. The new µ (mju) 740 and µ (mju) 750 will be in UK stores from September 2006, priced at around Ł260.00 and Ł300.00 respectively.
