Details announced of the UK's definitive celebration of the art of the image
The most important event in the UK photographic calendar - Photo-London - returns to the capital this spring with a month-long programme of events across the city, culminating with Photo-London 05 at the Royal Academy (May – 18th 22nd).
Involving over 50 galleries and institutions from across London, the UK and around the world, Photo-London 05 will provide a platform for the best photography, film and video from the entire history of the medium - including pioneering work from Henry Fox Talbot and Roger Fenton to Julia Margaret Cameron, from Henri Cartier Bresson to David Bailey, from Man Ray to Martin Parr, and Diane Arbus to Don McCullin and William Eggleston.
With works ranging from £500 - £500,000, Photo-London 05 is uniquely accessible, giving every visitor the chance to invest in, and talk to, world class photographers and artists – and with such critically acclaimed attendees the five days of Photo-London 05 will be unmissable for any photography lover.
Alongside the fair, Photo-London 05 will be running a series of talks, educational and curatorial events with leading photographers, critics and curators, as well as projects with the Victoria & Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. The highly successful curated exhibition, which in 2004 featured rising star Johnnie Shand Kydd, will be repeated in a space at the centre of the fair, with further details soon to be announced.
With over 18,000 estimated visitors, a glamorous celebrity launch party, and works from the finest photographers in the world, this year’s Photo-London 05 promises to be the chance for collectors, dealers and art lovers to experience the most comprehensive survey of photography ever displayed in the UK.
PHOTO-LONDON 2005
| Dates: | 19th – 22nd May | Address: | Royal Academy of Arts at Burlington Gardens |
| Preview: | 18th May | Director: | Daniel Newburg |
“As the success of our inaugural year in 2004 showed, the interest in photography in the UK is stronger now than it has ever been,” comments Daniel Newburg, founder of Photo-London. “This year, Photo-London will be more ambitious in its scope, bringing in more international galleries and extending and enlarging the programme of supporting events. From the V&A to East London, the aim is to spread our wings and reach as many people as possible.”
“The culmination, of course, will be Photo London 05 at the Royal Academy’s Burlington Gardens - bringing together what is effectively the largest and most comprehensive photographic exhibition of the year.”
“However, Photo-London 05 is not just about quantity, but the extraordinary opportunity to see the entire spectrum of the history of this medium. Within a few moments of entering the space you’ll be able to compare work from 19th century masters, to contemporary stars, back to post-war modernism, and 70’s topographers.”
“This is an art fair, but by no means exclusively a marketplace for professionals: prices start at around £500 – and there will also be a selection of some of the best publishers of books - as well as signing sessions, talks and
parties.”
”Photo-London aims to be the essential date for anyone and everyone with a love for of photography - in its broadest sense.”
Advisory Board
Photo-London 05 is supported by an advisory board comprised of key figures in the art community, respected art dealers, artists, writers and film producers.
