Rochester Photography Lecturer Exhibits Cutting–Edge Work
Ori Gersht, Senior Lecturer in Photography at the University for the Creative Arts Rochester campus, will be exhibiting his work ‘Time After Time’ at the Mummery Schnelle Gallery, www.mummeryschnelle.com Great Titchfield Street, London from 10 October to 10 November
Ori Gersht's practice as a photographer is concerned with history and metaphor, journeys and geographical place, intertwined with metaphysical space. Such themes have been explored through major works that document, often obliquely, violent moments in Europe's recent past. In his newest work Gersht investigates the relationships between photography, technology and optical perception, at a pivotal moment in the history of photography where digital technology both threatens a crisis and promises a breakthrough. Research into the early history of the medium of photography is brought together with theoretical discourse, creating still images and films that (literally) explode the genre of still life, the beautiful and destructive results captured using cutting-edge technology.
Widely recognised as being at the forefront of developments in contemporary art photography, Ori Gersht has an international profile established though exhibitions in major public venues such as Tate Britain, The Victoria and Albert Museum, The Photographers' Gallery, The Tel Aviv Museum of Art as well as numerous international commercial galleries. His work has been collected by many prestigious public collections including the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco and the Tate in London. He has been written about in high-profile survey publications such as Reality Check (2002), New Art from London (2006) and Image Makers, Image Takers (2007).
