One thing that has become very apparent in the last few weeks is the availability, at long last, of cheaper recordable DVD drives. The latest manufacturer to announce one is Lacie. Its new DVDRW drive is FireWire (IEEE 1394) powered and is designed for mobile use. The £649 (excl.VAT) drive can read and write 4.7GB DVD-R or DVD-RW discs as well as standard CD-R or CD-RW media. Depending on the type of recordable media being used it can write at up to 2.6MB/second. DVD-read capability is 6X (DVD), while in CD ROM mode it can perform at 24X (CD) speed.
With DVD-R/RW becoming increasingly established, it will be interesting to see how the rival DVD+R/RW standard performs. HP and others are expected to launch actual products in the next few weeks.
