30th January - 2002
By Ian Burley

The distinctive sit up and beg shape of the FinePix 601 Zoom is familiar. It’s based on the current FinePix 4800 and 6800 models that have helped Fujifilm maintain its dominance of the UK digital camera market.

Extended ISO sensitivity and revised 3rd generation SuperCCD imaging are a couple of key new features. The new CCD has, according to Fujifilm, lower noise and its extended ISO sensitivity is set to be the widest of any currently available compact consumer digicam. Unfortunately the new higher 800 and 1600 ISO settings can only be used a lower 1280x960 resolution setting.

Main new features are summarised below:

  • New 3rd Generation Super CCD sensor and advanced LSI algorithm (3.1 million effective pixels) producing class-leading 6.03 million recorded pixels (2,832 x 2,128)
  • Full photographic control including full manual exposure, aperture & shutter priority, advanced focus and metering options· Ultra-high sensitivity of 160-1600 ISO*
  • All-new stylish, ultra compact & lightweight design
  • Higher quality movie clip mode
  • High speed shooting at up to 5 frames per second
  • New USB PictureCradle for fast and easy image download and battery recharge
  • New easy-to-use Graphical User Interface

*800 and 1600 ISO settings in 1280x960 resolution mode only.

The FinePix S601 Zoom will ship in April and should have a list price of under £600.
