Released by Sony:
Sony to Launch New Enhanced Memory Stick PRO Media
· Larger capacities of up to 2 GB
· Faster access speeds of up to 80 Mbps
· Greater durability, operable under extreme temperatures
In Autumn 2004, Sony is launching a new range of high quality, high performance IC recording media. Building on the huge success of the Memory Stick PRO media range, Sony is introducing a new series of high-speed and basic media lines compatible with a vast array of current Memory Stick PRO devices.
The Memory Stick PRO (High speed) media comes in a variety of capacities to meet different user needs and budgets. Recognising the increasing demand – especially among professionals – for faster transfer of large-volume data, such as moving and still images and multimedia presentations, Sony’s top of the range model will have a 2 GB memory capacity in the standard-size version, supported by 256 MB, 512 MB and 1 GB models1 in both the standard and Duo-sized media.
The whole range stands out for its industry-leading read/write speeds of up to 80 Mbps
(10 MB/s)(2), as well as for its exceptional durability – the new media can operate under temperatures as low as –25°C and as high as 85°C. The combined speed and durability of the Memory Stick PRO (High speed) media makes it the ultimate portable storage device for professionals on the move.
Sony is also upgrading its basic Memory Stick PRO media line with new 256 MB and 512 MB capacities(1). Sony will launch these in standard and Duo sizes this autumn. The new enhanced line benefits from the same extended durability as the high-speed version, which has a wider operating temperature range of between –25°C and 85°C (compared to the previous range of 0°C to 60°C). The new basic Memory Stick PRO media is also more affordable for high-capacity memory users.
The new basic and high-speed version media are part of the Memory Stick PRO format, which was originally developed to provide high-capacity, high-speed performance for next-generation applications. It has a theoretical maximum data transfer speed of 160 Mbps (20 MB/s), while specifying a minimum write-speed of 15 Mbps to ensure high-quality, real-time recording of moving images. The Memory Stick PRO format is a scalable solution, designed with the future in mind, and will continue to evolve to meet the changing needs of users as well as the requirements of new and exciting applications.
1 A portion of Memory Stick PRO media capacity is used for data management functions.
2 Actual measurement achieved by Sony using its optimized testing system. Actual speeds realized will vary by and are dependent upon usage conditions and host hardware devices.
