The Magic of Gardening Captured in An Instant

Notcutts Garden Centres reveal the winners of its first nationwide photography competition

The Notcutts competition, which was launched earlier this summer, sought to find an image that perfectly captured the ‘magic of gardening’. Judging almost 5000 entries, The One Show’s Christine Helen Walkden and The Sun’s gardening editor Peter Seabrook chose an adult and a junior winner. After much debate Liz Dineley scooped the adult prize and the junior award winner was named as Kiera Patel.

Cambridge’s Liz Dineley won with her photograph named ‘Orchard’ that depicted two dew covered English apples in an orchard. The junior winner was Kiera Patel, from St Albans, whose photograph showed her sister proudly standing with a giant, home grown pumpkin in their family’s allotment – true magic!

Liz will receive a top of the range digital SLR camera and £500 worth of Notcutts vouchers – a prize worth over a whopping £1,000 and Kiera will receive a compact digital camera so she can continue on her path to becoming Britain’s next up and coming photographer.

Christine Walkden says: “Peter and I usually agree when it comes to gardening but finding an image that captured the ‘magic’ of the subject was pretty tricky. There were a few disagreements during the judging process but I think we have settled on two wonderful images and our professional relationship has remained intact…just!”

Commenting on the competition, Andy King, CEO of Notcutts added: “The entries that we received were so varied; it was absolutely wonderful to see what inspires people. We wanted people to get outside and take a closer look at how magical their garden is and they came back with an array of colourful shots that are absolutely magical.”

In addition to the two national winners, eighteen regional winners have also been selected who will each receive gift vouchers for Notcutts garden centres. An exhibition of their work will be held at each of their local garden centres.
