Finalists Announced in ‘Art of Building’ Photography Competition

Leaping in fountains beneath the London Eye, the shimmering reflections of old architecture in new surroundings – do you ever take a moment to observe life as it happens in the urban landscape around you? According to the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) that’s exactly what twelve photographers at various locations around the world have done following a call for entries to its Art of Building digital photography competition.
Launched in April, the contest elicited a fantastic response, inspiring entrants from all over the globe. The brief inspired professional photographers and enthusiasts alike to explore and capture the built environment in a unique and imaginative way.
“There were over a thousand images submitted, with entries from as far afield as Iran, Australia, India and China,” says Saul Townsend, CIOB press and communications manager. “The quality of the submissions was very high and the interpretation of the brief was extremely varied, which gave the judges plenty to talk about. The profile of entrants encompassed people from all walks of life, including professionals, students and non-commercial photographers.”
After appraising all the entries, the panel, which included Michael Brown, deputy chief executive of the CIOB, professional photographer Matt Wain and Elaine Knutt, editor ofConstruction Manager, debated the individual merits of the photographs they felt best celebrated the brief and presented a new and individual perspective on subjects. These included shots of some of the world’s most iconic buildings and structures.
The judges’ twelve favourite images will now be posted on the CIOB’s dedicated Art of Building website, where the overall winner will be decided by public vote.
Among the finalists is an image taken in West Bengal, India in which children are running amidst homes built from natural materials, which the judges felt created “a real sense of excitement.” Other shortlisted photographs included an image of the Hong Kong Mid-Levels described as “futuristic,” and the “impactful” image of a construction worker in a cherry picker ascending into a stormy sky.
“One of the aims of the CIOB is to celebrate the creativity of the construction industry, the passion of the people who work within it and the impact it has on our daily lives,” says Townsend. “Although they are extremely varied, the selection of photographs that have reached the final of the Art of Building contest each bring a unique perspective to the competition brief.”
