AA Launches the Second International Garden Photographer of the Year Book

The second International Garden Photographer of the Year competition has revealed another stunning selection of talented photographers from all over the world.

The truly global competition attracted entrants from London to Lithuania, Stockport to Saudi Arabia and Ayrshire to Australia. Whether it was botanical portraits, edible delights or snapshots of people enjoying their gardens, 155 finalists were selected from the 19,000 entries.

The finalists’ creations have now been captured in a stunning coffee table book published by the AA – The International Garden Photographer of the Year: Collection 02 – on 18 May 2009.

In addition to the finalists’ pictures, the book includes a selection of the commended photographs from all of the competition categories – including plant portraits, views, wildlife, people, as well as special categories for portfolios and Young Garden Photographer for the Year for under 16s.

The judging panel, including gardening expert Chris Beardshaw and highly respected photographers Andrew Lawson and Clive Nichols, were faced with the challenge of selecting the finalists for each of the categories.

International Garden Photographer of the Year judge, Chris Beardshaw said, “A garden is the most intricate of multifaceted sculptures and to capture it in its true spirit is the challenge for garden photographers. For me, the ability to harness and portray such a garden is every bit as complex as its initial creation.”

The finalists’ photographs will be showcased at an exhibition at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew from 23 May until 13 September, it will then move into the Shirley Sherwood Gallery for Botanic Art, still within Kew Gardens.

Claiming the title of International Garden Photographer of the Year was Jonathan Berman with his dreamlike photo taken in Tresco Abbey Gardens.  Following in Jonathan’s footsteps is 15 year old Kat Waters who was crowned Young Garden Photographer for the Year with a pictured titled Purple Haze.

The Garden Photographer of the Year: Collection 02 is published by AA Publishing priced £25.00 in Hardback format.
