Wandsworth Arts Festival announced

Arts festival’s photo focus

This year’s Wandsworth Arts Festival features photographic exhibitions, a competition, interactive photography workshops and talks from celebrated photographers.

The exciting combination of events will provide aspiring amateurs and enthusiasts with new inspiration and opportunities to develop their camera skills.

The events take place over two weeks in various location across the borough (May 8 - 24) - please view the full programme at www.wandsworth.gov.uk/artsfestival for times and locations, or pick up a leaflet from a Wandsworth library.

Renowned British artist, photographer and curator Richard Wentworth will talk about his work and explore his fascination with the coincidences of urban life at ‘In Conversation with Richard Wentworth’,The Stables, Ram Brewery. At this event, entry forms for photoWANDSWORTH09, our annual photography competition will become available.

Joe Madeira’s ‘Light Lines’ exhibition promises to be another highlight. Using LEDs, glowsticks, bike lights and keyring torches, Madeira draws movement with light on long camera exposures, creating ephemeral sculptures in urban environments.

Madeira will also be giving a talk about his latest exhibition and holding two ‘Drawing with Light Workshops’ as part of the festival. These are a fantastic opportunity to create unique digital images and discover how to draw using LEDs and long camera exposures. Tickets cost £5 and booking is essential.

Other essential exhibitions include:
‘… in the footsteps of Henry Taunt’; a portrayal of the contemporary landscape set against the vanished world of Victorian photographer Henry Taunt and Uklandscape’s ‘Wandsworth in New’ - a collection exploring new architecture in Wandsworth.

‘Identity’, an exhibition of photographs taken by the Wandsworth Mind Photography Group will be displayed at The Forester, Alfarthing Lane. On show at Roehampton University will be a collection of work from their final year photography students.

During Adult Learners Week, Wandsworth residents will be able to get to grips with the basics of digital photography, including downloading images and techniques to edit and enhance pictures at workshops in Tooting.

Executive member for environment and leisure Cllr Malcolm Grimston said:

“Photography is very strongly represented in this year’s festival and we hope that the fantastic array of exhibitions and workshops will help to inspire more local residents to pick up a camera and get involved with photography.

“There is something for everyone - from complete novices to skilled amateurs looking to expand their techniques so make sure you study the programme and put some dates in your diary.”
