Jocelyn Walker, originally from South Africa, but no resident in Australia, has been wowing everyone on the DPNow forum with examples and tips on creating transition photos, or photos which have been processed to resemble part drawing and part photo. One of Jocelyn's transition photos is today's feature Picture of the Day.
"I am thrilled that you have chosen my transition photo of Burano buildings for inclusion to POTD!" says Jocelyn. It's our pleasure! Jocelyn adds: "The original image was taken whilst on a 16 day tour of Europe in September this year. The village of Burano is on an island, just off the main bay of Venice!
"It is an amazing place, full of photographic opportunities! From brightly coloured, old buildings to reflections of these vibrant colours in the canals, as well as colourful characters of the local people!
"The photo was taken with my Panasonic DMC FZ30! Exposure of 1/320, f 5.6 focal length 19.6 and ISO set to the lowest, 80. I used automatic mode, for ease of use! No tripod available as so little time available whilst on tour!"
And what about the clever processing technique behind the transition effect? "The transition from photo to line drawing was initially done as an experiment, which turned out very pleasantly! This was done using Photoshop CS2 and using adjustment & mask layers, to adjust the usual saturation & contrast, levels! Then a vector layer in conjunction with a gradient, to reveal the photo beneath the line drawing, as a transition!" Seems simple!
And to round of, a little insight in to Jocelyn herself: "I am a Disability Support Worker! I live in Melbourne, Australia, having migrated from South Africa 8 years ago! My hobbies are digital photography & art, as in painting! (and of course being a member of DPNow forum, which I thoroughly enjoy!)
You can see more of Jocelyn Walker's work in his DPNow gallery - and it's well worth a look.

We are always on the look out for great pictures posted to the user-galleries here on DPNow. POTDs are selected from the gallery and featured every week day. The gallery facility here is completely free; all you need to do is register as a user on our discussion forum and you will get an automatic 25MB of space, which is good for around 125 pictures uploaded at web resolution, about 200K per picture. At the time of writing we had just over10,000 pictures on the galleries and it's well worth a browse.
Picture of the month
At the end of each month we will select our favourite image of the month and declare a Picture of the Month.
The DPNow Golden Gallery
Our ultimate accolade, the DPNow Golden Gallery, is reserved for what we feel are the very finest images. We invite anyone to submit their pictures for inclusion in the Golden Gallery. Why not have a look at the Golden Gallery submission form? The vast majority are politely rejected, which is why we feel that the ones we do feature are extra special.
